Sapphires and rubies are nearly pure crystalline alumina with trace impurities that add color. Activated alumina, such as BASF F200, is a very dry and porous type of aluminum oxide. It is incredibly strong with a high resistance to abrasion and can hold a great deal of liquid without changing form.
